A teacher from Missouri is facing the possibility of imprisonment after she reportedly sent explicit photos to a student and invited him to engage in sexual activity while her husband was away.
According to the Maries County Sheriff’s Department, Rikki Lynn Laughlin, 24, allegedly sent explicit photos to a male student at St. James High School in Missouri.
Laughlin is facing six felony charges for allegedly pursuing the 16-year-old, sending him pornographic images, and soliciting photos from him.
Most of the exchanges between Laughlin and the pupil occurred on Snapchat.
The police reportedly were told by the 16-year-old that they had kissed and things had “progressed fast” after she initially contacted him on Snapchat.
He claimed that she invited him to her home for sex while her husband was out of town.
According to the detective’s report, the boy said he made an excuse not to go to her house because he was “not feeling well.”
After receiving a tip from a detective about an inappropriate relationship at the school, officials initiated an investigation.
Laughlin allegedly instructed the student to erase the pictures they had traded after rumors started circulating among the students, claiming that she might face legal consequences for distributing the images and videos.
The police interviewed Laughlin later, and she did not deny speaking to the student over Snapchat but claimed that he had initiated the conversation.
She stated that she was not aware of his status as a minor until the day prior to the interview. It should be noted that the legal age of consent in Missouri is 17 years old.
She gave the police permission to search her phone, and the detective discovered a video that resembled the one described by the 16-year-old.
According to reports, Laughlin faced charges including possession of child pornography, tampering with a victim, attempted statutory rape, sexual exploitation of a minor, tampering with physical evidence, and sexual trafficking of a child.
Additionally, she was also charged with a misdemeanor for furnishing pornographic materials to minors.
“The District takes these matters seriously and reported allegations to appropriate outside agencies, including law enforcement,” school district Superintendent Tim Webster said.
“Our top priority remains the safety and well-being of our students, and we do not tolerate any policy or law violations within our educational community.”
On November 20th, a court hearing has been scheduled for Rikki Lynn Laughlin.
