I sat down for an exclusive interview for Where Is The Buzz with the stars and brilliant mind behind BORDERLINE, the new dark comedy thriller that sweeps viewers along an unexpected journey. Samara Weaving, Ray Nicholson, and writer-director Jimmy Warden discussed their own experiences in developing this wildly eccentric tale, presenting behind-the-scenes anecdotes, details about the characters, and why BORDERLINE should be on every viewer’s agenda.

A Darkly Comedic Love Story Like No Other
At its core, BORDERLINE is a story about obsession, fame, and the blurred line between love and delusion. The film follows Paul (Ray Nicholson), a wildly unpredictable yet strangely charming stalker who escapes from a mental hospital and takes pop superstar Sofia (Samara Weaving) hostage in her own home. However, as the night unfolds, their dynamic becomes more complex, blending dark humor with intense suspense.

Ray Nicholson on Bringing Paul to Life
Nicholson delivers a compelling performance as Paul, a character who could have easily been portrayed as a one-dimensional villain. Instead, Nicholson and Warden worked to add layers of humor, charm, and vulnerability to the role.
“One of the first things Jimmy and I talked about was how to make Paul likable—even though the first time you see him, he stabs someone,” Nicholson shared. “That was the challenge. We wanted to create a character where, despite everything, you kind of root for him. He’s funny, he’s sweet, and somehow, you start thinking… maybe he and Sofia should end up together.”
Nicholson’s ability to balance comedy with unsettling intensity makes Paul a fascinating character, keeping audiences unsure of what he’ll do next.
Samara Weaving Talks About That Epic Scene
Weaving is no stranger to bold, genre-blending roles, and BORDERLINE is no exception. One of the film’s most talked-about moments is a scene featuring a hilarious and unexpected duet between Weaving and co-star Alba Baptista, set to one of Celine Dion’s iconic hit songs.
When asked what she thought Celine Dion would think of the scene, Weaving laughed, “Oh, I bet she’d love it. She’d probably even write a song about it!”
What makes this moment even more interesting is that Dion herself had to approve the use of her song for the film. “She had to approve the script,” Warden revealed. While it’s unclear whether Dion personally approved the specific scene, her involvement adds an extra layer of fun to the film.
Jimmy Warden’s Inspiration and Favorite Scene
Jimmy Warden, who previously wrote Cocaine Bear, is known for crafting stories that continuously outdo themselves in terms of craziness. With BORDERLINE, he wanted to push boundaries even further.
“After writing Cocaine Bear, I wanted to create something that keeps escalating,” Warden explained. “I love movies where just when you think things can’t get any wilder, they do.”
When asked about his favorite scene to shoot, Warden immediately pointed to a hilariously bizarre dance sequence involving a police officer who is more focused on his audition than doing his job.
“This guy gets called in to help, but he’s too busy thinking about his audition. It’s such a Los Angeles moment. He’s holding his sides, practicing his lines, totally missing what’s going on around him. It was such a fun scene to shoot,” Warden shared.
The scene captures the film’s satirical take on Hollywood culture, blending absurdity with thrilling suspense.
