Sophie Cunningham of the Indiana Fever admits that the quiet stare-down incident is the worst moment she can recall and the one she will never want to experience again.
“I think it’s dumb,” Cunningham said. “But it was pissing her off, and I couldn’t help myself.”
The incident occurred during a heated match between the Phoenix Mercury and the Indiana Fever. Cunningham pointed out DeWanna Bonner for almost 11 seconds.
The video quickly spread on social media, and Cunningham admits that it had become “probably the number one meme, at least on Twitter this morning.”
On the Show Me Something podcast, Cunningham tells the whole story with gestures and a smile. According to her, everything began with disagreements over how the officiating was called. Cunningham asked a referee about the foul in the game, saying that one player should have received a whistle while another did not.
“If Caitlin’s gonna get one, then she should’ve got one,” Cunningham said. “It shouldn’t have been one or the other.”
While discussing this situation, Cunningham stated that she was “just kind of pointing” when Bonner reacted to it angrily.
“And she’s like, ‘Don’t you point at me,'” Cunningham recounted. “And I was like, ‘Oh, shouldn’t have said that.’ And I didn’t say a word.”
Despite all the criticism Cunningham received after that incident, she admitted that it was “the stupidest thing I’ve ever done.” Nevertheless, she believes that silence made it popular.
“Why it played so well is ’cause I literally did not say a word,” Cunningham said.
Although Sophie Cunningham is notorious for creating controversial situations on the playground, she has found that netizens’ reactions vary widely.
“People are really mean to you sometimes,” Cunningham said, “but people are so creative and funny. It kills me.”
