A TikTok influencer explains the myth that racism requires deliberate intent. In the video titled “One of the biggest myths about racism,” she claims that one can harm another person based on racial prejudice without being aware of it.
In her video, Kylie Brewer begins by comparing racism to other forms of unintentional harm.
“There is a lot of harm that is done in this world accidentally,” Brewer said. “People unintentionally say rude things to others all the time. So do you really think that racism, which is one of the biggest evils in the entire world, is only done intentionally?”
Brewer answers no, pointing to patterns of socialization among white Americans.
“No, especially with the way white people are socialized to only care for other white people and to put whiteness above all else,” she said.
She also mentions the spectrum of racism from violent actions to the behavior of a person who does not identify himself or herself as a racist.
“So yes, while there are the racists who commit hate crimes, and there are the racists who actively take people’s rights away because they overtly hate Black and brown people, there are also the racists who don’t even know they’re racist,” Brewer explains.
Brewer also links this last group to politics and says it makes up a significant part of Trump’s voters.
“And in fact, I would bet that that is a large portion of the voters for Trump,” she said. “Because they consider themselves to be good people, when in reality they are actively very, very racist and microaggressive. But because they don’t ‘intend’ to be that way, they don’t consciously think of themselves as racist.”
However, Brewer says this approach is deceptive.
“‘Oh, then actually there’s nothing wrong,’ but unfortunately that’s not the way it works,” Brewer said.
At the end of the video, Brewer urges viewers to listen to the people offended by their words.
“So listen to Black and brown people when they tell you that you made a racist comment,” she said. “Because again, it is a myth that racism requires evil intent, because it does not. You can accidentally be racist, and you probably have been.”
@kylie.brewer Intent doesn’t matter for racism. You can accidentally be racist, and it happens all the time. Please take accountability and apologize! #humanrights #education #antiracism #USHistory #sociology
