What seemed like a standard arrest for driving under the influence in a restricted zone in Cholula, Puebla, last Thursday took a bizarre turn when the driver, identified as 30-year-old Ariana Ferreriz, began spouting nonsensical comments and accusing her ex-partner of being an accountant for a financial operations group of one of the most feared, powerful, and violent cartels in Mexico.
The arrest came hours after Mexico beat South Africa in a soccer match, sparking widespread celebration in Mexico.
According to local media reports, police pulled Ferreriz over for driving in a restricted zone. Ferreriz physically resisted arrest in front of her children until she was tackled to the ground and handcuffed. In the process, she also spouted a string of nonsensical comments, including “Nobody knows who stole the jewels” and “I want my husband back,” according to reports.
But it was one particular comment that garnered special attention from authorities.
As the arrest was being carried out, Ferreriz accused a man by the name of José Antonio Pérez Aréchiga of being her ex-partner and, as one of his “former accounts” for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, CJNG, his financial accountant for a cell operating out of Veracruz.
The CJNG is one of Mexico’s most dangerous criminal organizations and was designated a transnational criminal organization by the U.S. Treasury Department. The criminal group is involved in several illicit activities, spanning dozens of Mexican states, and has spread to the United States and Europe.
Ferreriz was later released from custody following a medical evaluation and posted bail. Authorities have not stated whether or not additional charges will be filed.
The political sphere got involved when Nayeli Salvatori, a federal deputy from the ruling party Morena and a self-proclaimed friend of Ferreriz, publicly came to her defense, claiming that news outlets were misrepresenting what had occurred despite video footage of the entire incident circulating online.

The state attorney general’s office in Puebla has opened an investigation into the allegations made by Ferreriz. The accuracy of her statements has not yet been verified, nor have any arrests or charges related to her accusations been made or released.
It has been reported that José Antonio Pérez Aréchiga has released a statement about Ariana Ferreriz’s claims.
What are your thoughts on Ariana Ferreriz’s claims?
