Kylie Brewer, who identifies herself as a content creator, posted a TikTok video “Why trans women ARE women (in 60 seconds).” In the video, she argues that a biological definition of womanhood leaves many women behind and reduces women to a biological function of bearing children.
First, Brewer questioned a biological definition of womanhood.
“If you say a woman is someone who can give birth and have children, who has a uterus and ovaries, and you define it in terms of biology, then are women who can’t have children not ‘real women?” she wondered.
Then she applied that definition to cisgender women whose body or situation cannot fulfill it.
“Are women who are born without uteruses not real women? If they cannot fulfill the duties of being a mother, are they not real women?” Brewer questioned.
In that way, she showed that this category is an invention.
“This should just show you everything is a construct. Everything is made up,” she said.
Moreover, Brewer pointed out the cost of a biological definition of womanhood for all women.
“And if you reduce a woman to being able to give birth or not, that is literally creating a stereotype that we are just birthing machines,” she said.
Instead of the definition mentioned above, she proposed one based on a person’s identity.
“But being a woman is so much more than that. It’s an identity. It’s something that you embody,” Brewer said.
She also addressed those who object to identifying people as women.
“And if someone wants to identify as a woman, then quite literally, what does that have to do with you? Why does that bother you so much?” she asked.
Brewer explained that one person’s identity does not affect another’s.
“Of course someone else could be a woman. Someone else’s womanhood has nothing to do with my sense of womanhood, because it’s a construct,” she stressed.
The standards imposed by the category of a woman as something collective are impossible to follow uniformly.
“So as a society, we decide, ‘okay, a woman is someone who typically likes these things, who typically does these things,’ but there’s always going to be someone who strays outside of that norm,” Brewer explained.
Brewer ended the video addressing the viewers.
“So please do your best to accept our trans sisters and the dolls. We love you guys,” she said.
Her final phrase urged viewers to change their perception of trans women.
“It is seriously okay to be trans, and everyone needs to stop being transphobic as (expletive),” she concluded.
