The British pair Holly Cooper and Taylor Johnson, who are both 20 years old, were reported to be arrested at the Istanbul airport in Turkey on April 26th. The arrest was made when the customs officials discovered that there were two suitcases containing cannabis in their baggage when they were ready to board the connecting flight to London.
The arrest occurred just minutes after they landed in Istanbul, following a trip from Thailand. They are said to be facing a maximum jail term of 30 years if found guilty of the charges brought against them.
Both Cooper and Johnson will remain in custody until their case is heard in court, which can take up to one year, according to their family.
Their families believe that they may have been taken advantage of by seasoned offenders and forced to act as drug carriers without being aware of the consequences. In an effort to raise funds for their defense, their family members started a fundraising campaign.
Turkey is known to have some of the most severe punishments for drug trafficking in Europe.
