Prosecutors presented their first witnesses and exhibited some graphic pictures in a multi-day preliminary hearing that commenced on Tuesday in a murder case involving D4vd, a singer accused of murdering a teenager.
David Anthony Burke, the performer’s real name, 21, is facing first-degree murder charges with special circumstances, including committing lewd and lascivious acts on a child under 14 and mutilating a body, according to CBS Los Angeles. He is pleading not guilty and denying all the charges brought against him by his lawyers.
According to the station, Burke appeared in court dressed in an orange jumpsuit in downtown Los Angeles with the family and parents of the teen in attendance.
The special circumstances charge states that Burke planned and committed murder for financial gain and murdered a witness in an ongoing investigation, CBS Los Angeles reported.
Should he be found guilty of the above-mentioned charges, he is likely to face imprisonment for life without the possibility of parole or the death penalty. The district attorney, Nathan Hochman, has not said yet whether they will pursue the death penalty.
An attorney representing the family described the court photographs as being very gruesome.
As reported by TMZ, an attorney, Patrick Steinfeld, representing the family, described the remains as liquefied and resembling “mush” in the photographs, and the exhibits were so difficult for the mother of the teen, Mercedes Martinez, that she was crying throughout the hearing.
He said that in one of the photographs, which was very graphic, a deputy district attorney asked an LAPD detective what she was seeing, and the detective said it was Celeste’s head. He added that the remains of the teen were so badly damaged that they did not resemble a body.
According to ABC7 Los Angeles, the remains of Rivas Hernandez were found decomposed in front of Burke’s Tesla at a Hollywood tow yard in September 2025.
It has been revealed that the two of them had a sexual relationship for many years since they first met on social media, and she was threatening to expose the relationship and destroy Burke’s career, the station added.
Following the alleged murder, Burke purchased chainsaws, a body bag, heavy-duty laundry bags, and an inflatable pool that, according to the investigators, were used by him to dispose of the blood of the teen while dismembering her.
According to CNN, the prosecution filing with the evidence, the two first met in 2022 when she was 11, and they had sexual relations since November 2023.
The preliminary hearing is expected to last three to seven days, during which prosecutors will present testimony and evidence while cross-examining witnesses, ABC7 said.
At the end of the hearing, a judge will decide whether there is sufficient probable cause for the case to proceed to trial.
