Jennifer Lawrence attributes the online bashing to possibly keeping her from getting the Sharon Tate role in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood.
Lawrence appeared on the podcast “Happy Sad Confused” and said that while Quentin Tarantino had expressed interest in casting her in the role, doubts about whether she was “pretty enough” may have derailed those plans.
“‘[Quentin Tarantino] did [want me for the role], and then everyone was like, ‘She’s not pretty enough to play Sharon Tate.’ And then he [didn’t cast me].'” Lawrence explained. “I’m pretty sure it is true. Or it’s that thing where I’ve been telling the story this way for so long that I’ve come to believe it. No, but I’m pretty sure that happened. Or he was never considering me for the part, and the internet just went out of their way to call me ‘ugly.'”
This was in line with comments by Debra Tate, Sharon Tate’s sister, in 2019. Debra said she liked Margot Robbie’s look for the part.
There was never any mention by Tarantino of Lawrence being actively pursued for Tate. Later, he considered casting her in a minor role in the film. The role was eventually given to Margot Robbie after she wrote a letter to Tarantino and performed well in a movie that received an Academy nomination.
Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood (2019) received 10 Oscar nominations and won two.
