In a world where hiding your true emotions could lead to a monstrous transformation, Studio Colorido’s upcoming youth fantasy film, “My Oni Girl,” takes audiences on an emotional rollercoaster. The recently released trailer unveils this intriguing plot twist, adding depth to a story that delves into the consequences of concealing one’s feelings.
The film centers on Hiiragi (Kensho Ono), a young boy who struggles to say no for fear of rejection, and Tsumugi (Miyu Tomita), a spirited oni girl who encourages self-expression and open communication. As their unique friendship blossoms, they unravel secrets about themselves and the mysterious conditions that cause humans to turn into oni.
Adding to the film’s emotional resonance is the hauntingly beautiful theme song, “Truth in Lies,” by the enigmatic band ZUTOMAYO. Known for their creative performances that incorporate analog equipment and household appliances, ZUTOMAYO boasts over 2.5 million YouTube subscribers and two billion song plays. Their involvement with “My Oni Girl” marks a significant return, with another track, “Blues in the Closet,” set to be revealed soon.
ACA-Ne, the lyricist, composer, and vocalist of ZUTOMAYO, shared insights into the collaboration: “Being invited back to create music for Studio Colorido’s new film was incredibly affirming. The phrase ‘Not because somebody told me’ from discussions with Director Shibayama sparked a vivid image in my mind, aligning perfectly with a piece of music I was already developing. The song encapsulates themes of first encounters, life and death, and feeling like an outsider. Watch the film to uncover the intentional blank space in the lyrics during the song’s climax.”
Director Shibayama expressed his excitement about working with ZUTOMAYO: “Meeting with ZUTOMAYO was both meaningful and fun. The song they delivered doesn’t just complement our story; it expands on it, touching everyone who sees our film. It’s an honor to present this film, along with its wonderful soundtrack.”
Don’t miss “My Oni Girl,” a magical journey of friendship, self-discovery, and the transformative power of expressing emotions. The film will be available for streaming globally on Netflix and will hit theaters across Japan on May 24.
