The Disney+ adaptation of Rick Riordan’s renowned series, narrating the coming-of-age journey of Percy Jackson, an outsider who discovers he is the son of a god, transforming him into a demigod, has piqued the interest of book fans.
If you haven’t read the books or seen the underwhelming film adaptations starring Logan Lerman, the first episode “I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher” introduces us to Percy, a not-so-typical tween. He’s the son of single mother Sally (Virginia Kull), who has a jerk boyfriend Gabe, and Percy has always been a little “special” since he was a child. From strange occurrences to bullies, Percy prefers the lone wolf life, except for his best friend Grover (Aryan Simhadri). Percy’s life changes dramatically after taking a class field trip to The Met in New York City.
After an encounter with a bully results in Percy’s expulsion, his mother decides it’s time to reveal the truth: his father is a god, making him a demigod. And Grover? He was assigned to keep an eye on and protect Percy. The first episode is a fantastic introduction, promising stunning visuals, action-packed scenes, and a reasonably faithful book adaptation.
In Episode Two, “I Become Supreme Lord of the Bathroom,” Percy arrives at a training camp for demigods. Percy must now earn the respect of his fellow campers, particularly Annabeth (Leah Sava Jefferies), the most respected of the demigods. Episode Two will leave you feeling triumphant and invested in Percy’s quest.
Percy Jackson became a captivating young adult television series after only two episodes. It has similar themes and magical elements to the Harry Potter series’ success. While Percy Jackson plays it relatively safe in darkness, a little more exploration of despair and hopelessness in later episodes could add an extra layer. The well-executed cast, particularly the chosen trio, elevates the series, similar to Harry Potter’s success.
While book enthusiasts may quibble over minor details, newcomers will enjoy this series immensely, especially the Gen Z and Gen Alpha audiences.
Beginning December 20th, the first two episodes of Percy Jackson and the Olympians will be available on Disney+. Every Wednesday, new episodes will be released.
