‘Alice in Borderland’ Season 2 Review: What’s A King To A Joker?

Alice in Borderland

Netflix’s ‘Alice in Borderland’ season 2 has finally arrived on the streaming platform since the series debuted in 2020. Some of the eye-catching factors in season one such as brutal games and the what f*ck moments are still intact for the new season.

This season, the writing may have gone over some viewers’ heads with deeper meanings in the challenges that Arisu (Kento Yamazaki), Usagi (Tao Tsuchiya), and Chishiya (Nijiro Murakami), Ann (Ayaka Miyoshi), and Tatta (Yutaro Watanabe) face when they have to against experienced players. For most of the season, the group is separated while going through these challenges due to the King of Spades’ explosive introduction in the first episode.

The season bounces back and forth from the main characters’ arcs which keeps the viewer’s eyeballs glued to their televisions. This allows Yasuko Kuramitsu and Shinsuke Sato to introduce new characters in the series that the audience will sympathize with it, including some of the experienced players.

Some of my favorite new characters from this season were Ginji (Tomohisa Yamashita) and Akane Heiya (Yuri Tsunematsu). Ginji was straight-up teaching Arisu life lessons during their time together. Akane was a little on the slut side but she was a funny hoe. Her scenes with Arisu were funny as hell and also put in a good word for him when she met Usagi for the first time. One thing but Akane is she’s badass and she can fight. She’s willing to put her life on the line to save others. Another character I enjoyed this season that was introduced to us last season was Mira Kano (Riisa Naka). Her game was the simplest physically but might have been the hardest game in the series mentally. She had Arisu under a stupid Genjustsu in episode seven of this season. I wished we would have gotten more from her character this season.

The flashbacks this season were good and I even appreciated the flashbacks for the new characters as well. Viewers will see the growth of these characters from the flashbacks. Some characters were selfish and now they are selfless. Some characters wasted time and didn’t care about time and now they just want to stay alive for a second chance. This season made me appreciate everything that is surrounding me because sometimes in life we focus more on our wants instead of appreciating what we have around us.

The overall message for this season to me was unity. Even most of the games the characters participated in could have been solved by everyone coming together. The first season was just about survival this season you had to rely on others to get you through the next round, well everyone outside of Chishiya, which is the wild card for me in the show. He’s the most interesting character in the series to me because he has no fear or emotion at all of anything. Aguni (Shô Aoyagi) wants to kill himself every second but shows more emotions than Chishiya. I wouldn’t be surprised if Chishiya was the game master all along. I truly believe he plays a bigger part in the show.

I would love to see ‘Alice in Borderland’ season 3 based on how they ended season 2 but I believed they covered the second half of the original Manga. We will see what happens next with the series. You can stream all episodes of Alice in Borderland Season 2 on Netflix today.
