TikToker Breaks Down the 3 Types of Racist White Liberals She Keeps Running Into in NYC

A TikToker, Kylie Brewer, says that she has found a trend of racism by white people in New York City, despite the politically liberal attitude of the city.

According to a video shared on TikTok by Kylie Brewer, there are three major forms of racism that white people engage in the city.

“Here are the three types that I see the most,” Brewer said in the video.

The first type, which Brewer called the “microaggressive white liberal,” involves subtle bias that can surface even among people from diverse backgrounds. Brewer said one example came when a friend planned to host a party and the friend’s roommate asked, “Are they going to steal anything?” in reference to guests, many of whom were Black.

“It’s surprising that people would be this racist, given that they grew up in New York City,” Brewer said. “But again, it’s because they haven’t actually worked on their internalized biases.”

The second type Brewer described is what she called the “drive-by,” in which racial slurs emerge during arguments. Brewer said this behavior is most common among older generations.

“Whenever arguments happen in New York, a lot of the time it turns racial, at least for white people,” Brewer said. “I’ve seen slurs hurled. I’ve seen a lot of things come up, and especially I feel like this is the most common among older generations, because they don’t even fear if someone records them. They don’t really care about that.”

The third type, Brewer said, involves white residents who confront Black people they don’t recognize in their neighborhoods.

“The very intrusive, sort of prying liberal white people … literally cannot mind their business,” Brewer said. “If there’s a Black person on the block, they have to go say something and interrogate them. Ask them who they are, where they’re from, why they have any business being on the block.”

Brewer said the patterns she described illustrate that racism remains present even in cities widely viewed as politically liberal.

“It just shows how even in a progressive city, racism is still rampant,” she said. “So if this is you, please work on it. It’s not okay.”
