Tyler Perry continues to expand his creative footprint at Netflix with a newly minted multi-year first-look series deal. The first fruit of this collaboration is the 16-episode hour-long drama titled “Beauty in Black,” a project where Perry wears multiple hats as writer, director, and producer.
“Beauty in Black” unfolds the intertwined lives of two women, Kimmie and Mallory, each navigating vastly different paths. Kimmie grapples with the challenges of making ends meet after being estranged by her mother, while Mallory thrives in the world of successful entrepreneurship. The series promises a compelling exploration of their interconnected fates.
Joining forces with Perry in this venture are Angi Bones and Tony Strickland, both set to produce under the Tyler Perry Studios banner. This collaboration marks a strategic move by Perry to leverage his storytelling prowess in the streaming domain.
The creative partnership between Perry and Netflix, initiated in 2023, extends beyond the realm of series to encompass feature films. Under this expansive deal, Perry is set to write, direct, and produce a range of films for the streaming giant.
Among Perry’s upcoming cinematic endeavors with Netflix are “Six Triple Eight,” boasting an ensemble cast led by Kerry Washington, and “Mea Culpa,” featuring Kelly Rowland. These films join a roster of previous Netflix releases, including “A Jazzman’s Blues,” a poignant tale of forbidden love showcased at the Toronto International Film Festival, “A Madea Homecoming,” the twelfth installment in the iconic Madea franchise, and the suspenseful “A Fall from Grace.”
