WATCH: The Terrifying Moment A Wall Of Water Swallows An Entire Village On The Nepal China Border

A massive rush of water and debris hit villages in mountainous regions of Nepal near the country’s border with China, claiming 31 lives and leaving hundreds missing, including some tourists, officials say.

A video uploaded to Nepal Police’s official account and verified by media outlets shows people running away from a rush of water that destroys a whole valley in less than a second. The footage shows houses, roads, bridges, and construction projects being swept away by rushing water.

The flash flooding originated on the Tibetan side of the Bhote Koshi River, entered Nepal around 9 a.m. local time, and first hit Rasuwa District, followed by the neighboring districts of Nuwakot and Dhading.

According to officials, an earthquake might have triggered a massive rock and ice avalanche that blocked the flow and created a dangerous surge of water going downstream. Officials warn that the cause is still under investigation, and debris that blocks the way could trigger another flood.

Helicopters used for rescue missions could not land in the areas hit by the flood because the river level is much higher than usual, and rescue teams cannot reach towns that became unreachable because of flooded roads.

384 travelers, including 291 foreigners, were registered as missing as authorities investigate their safety, according to the Nepal Tourism Board. The board says the police forces responsible for tourists and travel agencies are working to locate all visitors who were in or passed through the affected area.

The disaster affected even the neighboring state. A mudslide hit the Gyirong crossing point and caused road, communications, and electricity blackouts in the Shigatse region of Tibet, according to Xinhua News Agency. Chinese officials reported that there might be many casualties in Tibet.

Nepal Electricity Authority reports that several power plants and transmission lines are destroyed and electricity supply is interrupted in the affected districts.

Later on Wednesday, a spokesman for Nepal Police told AFP that the number of fatalities increased to 95, of whom around 30 are police personnel.

Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police have been deployed for a search and rescue operation. Officials stated that more fatalities may happen as rescuers reach the villages farther downstream.
