A former middle school teacher in Delaware has been accused of raping a student on multiple occasions, according to Delaware State Police.
A 42-year-old woman named Reed Messer got extradited to Delaware on Monday after being detained at her home in Greenville, South Carolina, according to Delaware State Police.
According to the investigators, the teacher and student began a sexual relationship in October 2014 that lasted for about two months.
Authorities said they received a report from the Division of Family Services in late December alleging that a former teacher at Wilmington’s Stanton Middle School had a sexual relationship with a juvenile student about nine years ago.
South Carolina authorities arrested Messer on April 26th after police obtained an arrest warrant for her.
In addition to two counts of sexual abuse of a child by a person of trust, Messer is charged with ten counts of third-degree rape and ten counts of fourth-degree rape.
She is being held in the women’s prison in Delaware, and her bond has been set at $310,000 in cash. On the court calendar, Messer’s legal representative was not indicated.
According to Delaware authorities, Messer has not worked for the Red Clay Consolidated School District, which includes Stanton Middle School, since November 2014.
Following her departure from Delaware, Messer was reportedly hired by the Greenville, South Carolina-based charter school Legacy Early College. School officials ignored an email requesting confirmation that she worked there.
Messer was first certified as a teacher in South Carolina in July 2015 for elementary and early childhood education, middle-level language arts, English, and special education, according to the South Carolina Department of Education’s website. In November, Messer received a literacy specialist endorsement. “Summary suspension” is the status of her certificate.
