Netflix Drops First Trailer For ‘East of Eden’ With Florence Pugh

Netflix released the first teaser of East of Eden on Wednesday, featuring Florence Pugh, Christopher Abbott, and Mike Faist.

It is the story of the interwoven destinies of the Trask and Hamilton families in California’s Salinas Valley. The series will have seven episodes and will air on Netflix starting October 1st.

In this adaptation, Pugh portrays the antiheroine named Cathy Ames. Abbott stars as her husband, Adam Trask, while Mike Faist portrays Adam’s brother, Charles. The trailer emphasizes how much Cathy mistrusts the house and how Charles tells his brother that no such girl happens just by chance.

Other members of the cast include Ciaran Hinds (Samuel Hamilton), Hoon Lee (Lee), Tracy Letts (Cyrus Trask), Martha Plimpton (Faye), Joseph Zada (Cal Trask) and Joe Anders (Aron Trask).

It adapts the 1952 novel by John Steinbeck, set in the valley where he was born. It uses the biblical theme of Cain and Abel and was written in five months.

Zoe Kazan adapted Steinbeck’s novel into a limited series and serves as the showrunner along with Jeb Stuart. Fifth Season and Anonymous Content serve as producers.

This adaptation has a family history, since Kazan’s grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film adaptation that made James Dean famous. James Dean starred in the movie while Jo Van Fleet won an Oscar for playing Cathy. ABC aired a miniseries adaptation of the novel in 1981.

East of Eden starts on Netflix Thursday, October 1st.
