The Nobel laureate’s publisher confirmed that the author died at a hospital in New York on Monday night.
We are profoundly sad to report that Toni Morrison has died at the age of eighty-eight.
“We die. That may be the meaning of life. But we do language. That may be the measure of our lives.”

From Sonny Mehta: “Toni Morrison’s working life was spent in the service of literature: writing books, reading books, editing books, teaching books. I can think of few writers in American letters who wrote with more humanity or with more love for language than Toni.”
“Her narratives and mesmerizing prose have made an indelible mark on our culture. Her novels command and demand our attention. They are canonical works, and more importantly, they are books that remain beloved by readers.”
The Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning author’s work focused deeply on African-American life and culture. Her 1987 novel, “Beloved,” won the Pulitzer Prize.
Literally one of the greatest minds of our time. Of all time. She carved space for so many of us to feel more at home in our existence.
I keep looking for words to say but she said all of them better. She made all of us better.
