Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., said constituents in her district are struggling with the rising cost of living, citing increases in groceries, electricity, mortgages, interest rates and rent, according to a 26-second video clip of an interview conducted outside the Capitol.
“People can’t afford. I mean, they’re getting taxed on everything,” Mace told Pablo Manriquez, a reporter for the MeidasTouch Network, when asked what she is hearing from constituents about affordability. “Groceries are up, electricity is up, their mortgages, the interest rates.”
Mace pointed to housing costs in Mount Pleasant, a community in her district, as an example of the strain on residents.
“Rent is up in Mount Pleasant in my district. For a three-bedroom apartment, it’s going to cost you $5,000 a month, and nobody can afford that,” she said. “It’s crazy.”
Mace also acknowledged that President Donald Trump’s pledge to cut electricity prices in half has not been fulfilled.
“Trump had said that he was going to bring down electricity prices by 50%,” she said. “Hasn’t happened yet, has it?”
