After officers found an Indianapolis mother riding a bicycle with her 2-month-old twins in a crate on the bicycle, she was charged with two counts of neglect of a dependent.
Blossum Kirby, 36, has been identified as the mother. According to the New York Post, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers detained Kirby after receiving numerous calls from witnesses who saw Kirby riding a bicycle on the city’s east side with her twins and nearly fall off.
According to reports, Kirby had twin babies in two milk crates that were mounted to her bicycle, one in the front and one in the back.
Police claim that the pizza restaurant where Kirby worked, Just Pizza, had a video of Kirby riding the bike and nearly falling over. Kirby was allegedly drugged up, according to the witnesses on the scene.
Kirby reportedly told police that she doesn’t own a car, she always brings her children with her on a bicycle. The police were also informed by Kirby that she saw nothing wrong with what she was doing. Police say that Kirby, who lives with her mother, was traveling to a friend’s home when the incident occurred.
According to the police, they reportedly asked Kirby if the father could come to pick up the children and who he was. According to court documents, the police claim that Kirby was unaware of the father’s identity and that she claimed to have met him while in her “prostitution phase.”
Police claim that she vehemently denied using drugs. Local medical personnel helped the infants. They claim that both infants suffered from sunburn, wounds, and scratches.
Kirby was eventually taken to the Marion County Jail for neglecting a dependent. An initial court appearance is scheduled for August 1 at 9 a.m. She faces two counts of neglect of a dependent.
